Our Journey to 250
In the year 2026, America will celebrate its 250th birthday! The last big celebration, the Bicentennial, occurred in 1976 and planning began as early as 1972.
For most of us who are adults, this will be perhaps the largest Fourth of July celebration and the last major Independence Day celebration we will have in our lifetime. It’s our last best chance to show how blessed and thankful we are to be citizens of the United States of America. The next major Declaration of Independence Day celebration will be the Tricentennial 300th celebration to be held on July 4, 2076.
The U.S. Semiquincentennial Commission was established by the United States Congress on July 22, 2016, to plan and orchestrate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence of the United States. America250.org (“A250”) is the nonprofit supporting organization to the U.S. Semiquincentennial Commission. America250.org works collaboratively with the Commission to collaborate with public-private partnerships at the state, county, and city level.

Each county in the state of North Carolina is allowed one official committee to create events and establish guidelines for each each county on how they will celebrate America 250 in 2026. Representatives on these county committees can include people from a wide variety of organizations and were able to apply for grant funding for specific America 250 related projects. The Iredell County America 250 NC Committee consists of over two dozen members from various local organizations including Mitchell Community College, Statesville NAACP, Iredell-Statesville School, Town of Mooresville, Town of Troutman, United Way of Iredell County, Daughters of the American Revolution, and many more. Administrative staff at the Iredell County Public Library is leading the committee.
