County Flag Challenge
The America 250 NC Fourth Grade Challenge invited students across Iredell County to explore local history, culture, and geography through creative expression. Open to all 4th graders, the challenge encouraged participants to design a flag and share the meaning behind their work, with support from local schools and public library branches throughout the county.
Through this initiative, students had the opportunity to think critically about their community while contributing to a meaningful, public-facing project that celebrates Iredell County’s unique identity during this historic milestone.
First Place: Norah Burnett
This year’s first place design stood out for its deeply personal and meaningful representation of Iredell County. From the importance of Lake Norman and its role in local recreation, to the historical presence of Indigenous peoples in the region, Norah's flag brings together several elements that reflect both community identity and personal connection. Floral imagery highlights the natural beauty of the area, while the inclusion of the county seal honors a family legacy of public service. Altogether, the design tells a heartfelt story of pride, place, and connection to Iredell County.

Runner-Up: Taryn Andreotta
Norah's second place entry impressed with its thoughtful use of color and symbolism to represent the spirit of Iredell County. Each color in the design was chosen to reflect qualities like joy, nature, calmness, and healing. The imagery also highlights the region’s strong ties to motorsports, a nod to North Carolina’s rich racing heritage, while incorporating a reference to Iredell’s place in the state’s history as the tenth congressional district. The result is a creative and well-considered interpretation of what makes the county unique.
